Thanksgiving dinner is one of the most anticipated meals of the year. Not only do you get to spend it with friends and family, but you also get to enjoy some once-a-year holiday treats at the same time. This year, before you go undoing all that hard work you’ve put into your oral health in one meal, take a moment to plan your turkey-day menu carefully with these tooth-saving tips!
Sugar Substitutes
If you’re not a regular dessert diner, you probably won’t destroy your teeth by having a little sugar just this once, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make smart swaps where you can. Instead of using it in pies and cookies, switch to a substitute like xylitol instead. That way, you can still enjoy the dishes that can’t be modified without exposing your teeth to as much in one sitting.
Curb your Carbs
Carbohydrates contain starches that cavity-causing bacteria love. Don’t let them in on the feast, swap carbs for vegetables instead. They’re more filling, better for you, and just as delicious!
Stop Stains
Foods like cranberries, red wine, and coffee can all deposit color that could stain your teeth. That, and they contain acid that can damage your tooth enamel, so if you do enjoy them, try alternating sips of water so you rinse it away before it has a chance to cause problems.
Stay on Track
It can be hard to keep on top of your oral hygiene routine during the holidays, especially if you’re traveling or making the rounds from meal to meal, but don’t let yourself fall out of habit. Missing one brushing won’t be catastrophic, but missing multiple can take its toll on your teeth and gums, especially if you’re eating a lot more treats than usual.
Remember, the holidays are meant to be fun, but don’t give yourself a free pass to neglect your oral health. Stay on track with your diet and hygiene all season long, and you’ll have plenty of reasons to smile in the new year!
